Fire crews at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection don't have to look too far to find a hero. They have one right in their midst. Fire engineer Tim Valadez has made an astonishing recovery after a horrific truck accident in 2002. Today, six years later, he's not only survived seven surgeries, extensive physical rehabilitation and even radiation therapy, but has also slipped back into his old job, fighting fires with gusto!

It's one of those stories that fill you with gratitude for the sometimes thankless job our firefighters do when they risk their lives to make sure the rest of us are safe. On the day of the truck crash, 34-year-old Valadez was driving with has fire crew on Highway 15 when the truck suddenly dropped its transmission. The impact of the massive transmission dropping on the pavement was so strong, it sent the 33,000-pound truck flying up to 10 feet into the air. It skidded across the freeway, and rolled over several times before finally breaking in half, and coming to a stop near some boulders. Luckily, none of the other vehicles on the freeway were touched in the truck accident, but for the fire engineer inside, it was a different story. Valadez took the brunt of the impact, his pelvis and his right leg were shattered.

The months after the truck accident were painful. Valadez had to undergo several surgeries to regain his strength. His wife Denise was forced to quit her job to nurse her husband back to health. Every time Valadez took one step towards recovery, there were two complications pulling him back. To make matters worse, the truck accident left a stain on his record - he was blamed for the accident. The reports claimed that he had been unable to control the vehicle.

Then came news that painted a totally different picture of the story. Another engine from the same manufacturer, Navistar International suffered the exact same fate as the one Valadez was driving - it dropped its transmission. In that accident, the truck was crawling along at a low speed when the transmission dropped. The company quickly recalled all 10 engines from the line.

After months of therapy, non-stop pain, hope and disappointment and hope again, Valadez is back to his old job. What's more, he's even driving an engine with the same number that he used to before the truck accident. His story is one of inspiration to a new generation of firefighters at the department who look up to him, as well they should.

While Valadez has made a remarkable recovery, he has lost six years of his life as he struggled though his situation, What's more, the blame for the truck accident that has blotted his record will likely stay which is not just unfortunate, but extremely unfair. This was an accident that was obviously caused due to the defective truck manufactured by the company, Navistar International. This brave firefighter has been though one of the worst possible life experiences any person can go through, and for no fault of his own. His faith and his family life have been severely tested.
