As we have discussed on this Metrolink train accident attorneys blog, it would be a fallacy to treat the recent train crash in Chatsworth as a freak accident that couldn’t possibly happen again. In fact, given the number of high-risk tracks around the state, and dated safety measures that belong to centuries past, it’s a wonder that we have not encountered more Metrolink train accidents of this magnitude.

Metrolink will need to undertake a complete overhaul of the system, and this train accident could just be the sort of wakeup call officials at Metrolink need.  The agency is woefully mismanaged, with none of the board members having any sort of expertise in rail safety. The agency believes it should protect its passengers from terrorist attacks, yet exposes them relentlessly to archaic safety risks that are only now under the microscope. For instance, there is no provision for having a second engineer in the locomotive, and no way of monitoring the activity of the engineer while he’s in the locomotive.  All Metrolink tracks are high risk which means they are shared by freight trains and passenger trains, and yet, there are no special systems in place to deal with this unique situation, and the challenges it poses.

Suffice to say, the recent Metrolink train crash has caught Metrolink in a state of slumber, and it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee. The good news that has come from this tragic situation is that the public is now more aware of the mismanagement that has been going on for so long, and is demanding answers.  For too long, Metrolink has been allowed to override safety in favor of costs, and as the simmering mood of public discontent indicates, this won’t be tolerated anymore.
