Good Samaritan Loses a Leg to Amputation
November 14, 2007

24-year-old Sara Gash was perfectly placed to help some one in need. The mother of two had just completed a course as a medical office assistant and had an inherent desire to help those she saw were in trouble. So when on the dark and rainy evening of October 14 she saw a pickup truck skid across the highway and overturn, she knew exactly what she had to do. There wasn't any question about it. She stopped her car and jumped over the concrete barrier to get to the pickup truck. She talked to the driver trapped inside, and began calling for help on her cell phone. She didn't even notice the east-bound car until it hit her. The impact threw Gash to the ground, her left leg broken and her right one crushed.

Since the day of the accident Gash has had a total of 10 surgeries, the first of which was nearly 10 hours long. Her left leg has been stabilized somewhat but she wasn't as lucky with the right one. Last Thursday, an amputation was performed to cut the right leg off at the knee.

Gash is uninsured and wasn't working at the time of the accident. A recovery fund has been set up for her hospital funds. Gash's mother says her daughter is trying to be brave, but of course it's "too early to tell." Dreams of becoming a physical assistant and helping with children who have autism (her older son Michael has autistic tendencies) are not over yet, but her condition "just slows it down somewhat," she says ruefully.

No charges have been filed yet against the 19-year-old driver of the car that hit Gash.

When catastrophic personal injuries like amputations are caused due to the negligence of another party, the person can be held liable for compensation for the victim's medical bills, pain and trauma.
